Do you need a Canada Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)?

Canada Permanent Resident Travel Document is a visa type for clients who already obtain Canada Permanent Resident identity.


According to the Canadian law, Canada Permanent Residents are required to have either Canada Permanent Resident Card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) whenever they return to Canada.




What kinds of clients are required to obtain the Canada Permanent Resident Travel Document?

1. People waiting to receive Permanent Resident Card:

After successful immigration to Canada, you are allowed to stay in Canada for 1 to 2 weeks for your first landing. However, the Permanent Resident Card takes around 3 months to be issued. During the period, if there is any emergencies that requires to go back to Canada, then you need the Permanent Resident Travel Document.


2. People who lost their Permanent Resident Card:

If you are renewing or reissuing your expired Permanent Resident Card and you need to go to Canada due to emergencies, then you need the travel document.


3. People who have their Permanent Resident Card expired:

Things to be reminded: You are required to fulfill the Land of Staying requirement when your Permanent Resident Card is expired. You cannot apply for the Canada PRTD when you haven't fulfilled the Land of Staying requirement.
